Growing prize winning hanging baskets and potted plants is easy when you follow a few
simple rules:
- Good soil mix
- Correct fertiliser
- Good watering practice and correct light
SOIL MIXES
Potting mix comes in a variety of qualities. Generally mixes produced in southern
states do not hold enough water. Plants in the tropics use 6 times as much water as they
do down south!
Choose a top quality tropical potting mix and you cant go wrong. If you are
growing high quality perennials or hanging baskets try the following mixes:
- 1 part Tropigro Potting Mix + 1 part Tropigro Fast Peat (bricks or superbales) or
- 80% Tropigro Fast Peat + 20% Coarse River Sand or
- 100% Tropigro Fast Peat hanging baskets only or
- Tropigro Hanging Basket Potting Mix
FERTILISERS
The use of slow release fertilisers is considered essential. Tropigro Osmocote in 3
month or 6 month formulae will give excellent results on all kinds of potted plants. Mix
Tropigro Osmocote through the potting mix when planting. Re-apply on the surface every 3-4
months.
LIQUIDS AND SOLUBLES
Well they are just supplements and do not replace solid fertilisers. If you do use one
choose a good one like Liquid 10-97 and use it every week. The results can be excellent!
WATERING PRACTICE
Potted plants and hanging baskets must not be allowed to totally dry out. So if you
can, set up a spray system and water early morning as well as evening. |
